Starting from today and until 22 October 2021, everyone can vote for their favourite candidates in the Warsaw Woman of the Year 2021 contest. The jury has selected 10 out of 77 candidates to compete for the title.
The Warsaw Woman of the Year is a contest that honours women whose community or professional activities have made an extraordinary contribution to Warsaw’s development and promotion. This year's nominees are: Katarzyna Augustynek, Sylwia Chutnik, Kamila Górniak, Marina Hulia, Agnieszka Kępka, Olga Kozierowska, Marta Lempart, Agnieszka Sikora, Wanda Traczyk-Stawska and Magdalena „Lusia” Żagałkowicz.
We organised the contest for the first time in 2018, on the 100th anniversary of Polish women's right to vote, to pay due respect to the women of our city. Today, as their rights are being undermined, we can see with increasing clarity how important it is to appreciate the role of women who are strong, open-minded and uncompromising. Women whose courage helps Warsaw to change, to become a better place to live for all of us,” said Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski. “The ten women nominated for this year's edition of the Warsaw Woman of the Year give us ten reasons to be proud of our city, he added.
The Warsaw Woman of the Year 2021 title will be awarded for both their contributions to the city and their efforts to promote such values as tolerance, as well as for their outstanding achievements in their fields, and their championing of women, civil society and local community.
I am extremely proud to have the opportunity to participate in another edition of the Warsaw Woman of the Year contest. Warsaw is a friendly, tolerant and open city for everyone, and we should give great credit for this to all the courageous, strong-minded, energetic, open-minded, hard-working, but also sensitive women. We still have a lot to do, said Deputy Mayor of Warsaw Renata Kaznowska.
Each woman of Warsaw, each of us, is different. We are as diverse as the city. And this is where our and our capital's power lies. The women of this city can and are not afraid to stand up for themselves and for others, fighting exclusion and championing the rights of minorities. I am also grateful that men have joined us in this struggle for equality in many aspects of our lives, said Deputy Mayor of Warsaw Aldona Machnowska-Góra.
The guiding theme of this year's edition of the Warsaw Woman of the Year is hope. This is to inspire a discussion on what gives hope to Warsavians today. This year the jury has recognised 10 women whose activities demonstrate how the world around us can be changed by consistent effort. During today's announcement of the nominations, each of the candidates received a graphic made by Marta Frej.
