The Mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, reached agreement with her counterpart Oleksandr Novok, Secretary of the Kharkov's city, on cooperation between their respective cities in the capital's city hall.

- The cooperation between Warsaw and Kharkov began in 2008, and ever since we have been conducting a series of intensive exchange of experiences and fitted practices. Furthermore, and undeniably, our respective cities will be host to the EURO2012 championship – noted Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the Mayor of Warsaw.

- Moreover, Kharkov is also an active member in the network of the major European cities, EUROCITIES, in which Warsaw is the current acting Vice-President. With the intensification of these activities, Warsaw contributes to the strengthening of its international image as a vibrant and modern city, in the European Union; a city that welcomes cooperation and is guided by the principles of solidarity – said Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the Mayor of Warsaw.

Additionally, Warsaw came to be the first Capital city to establish bilateral relations with Kharkov. The city of Kharkov has received honors and awards from the Council of Europe.

- This demonstrates our commitment to the international affairs. The signed agreement will create new opportunities for both sides. One of the key issues we discussed is to prepare for the upcoming EURO2012 Championship. Equally important is also the experience of self-government displayed by Warsaw. The signing of the agreement precedes tomorrow's official visit of the President of Ukraine. This is a good omen for our cooperation – said Oleksandr Novak, the Kharkov Secretary.

The partnership agreement between Warsaw and the Ukrainian city of Kharkov serves as a major Polish policies towards the Eastern Cooperation Program. This partnership provides closer ties with Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. In the long term, the program is to make preparations for the accession of the above-mentioned countries to the EU.

The Agreement concluded between the cities will be under yearly plans based on the exchange of information and experiences, official and unofficial visits, and of cultural and students interchange.
