Replacement and repair of pavements of Old Town streets, market and yards within the walls took four years. They were divided into stages so that works disturbed the inhabitants and tourists to the lowest extent possible. In November 2015, they were finally completed.
- Warsaw has cared about its monuments for many years, allocating money for their renovations. Today we meet on the occasion of completion of repairs of pavement of streets in the Old Town, after 4 years. It was a great project that raised much emotions. Such a huge front of works had to be reconciled with the interests of the locals and tourists. – said Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. Mayor of Warsaw.
Repair of pavements was supervised by the Public Areas Administration. The total value of works is nearly 9 million PLN.
For many years, Warsaw has granted funds for renovations of the capital city monuments. Financial support is given to owners, administrators, residential communities. Many beneficiaries are residential communities in the Old Town. From the total sum, that is more than 12 million PLN that we allocated this year for financial support, nearly 1.5 million PLN were received by owners of tenement houses in the Old Town. The renovations made it possible to restore their beauty from the period of reconstruction, that is from time when the Old Town was entered on the list of UNESCO World Heritage in 1980 as "an extraordinary example of complete reconstruction of a historic complex."
The largest transformation is conducted now in 11 tenement houses of Strona Dekerta comprising the Museum of Warsaw. The first stage was the commissioning of historical basements. Now the works are conducted in the interiors on the facades. The colours and decorations of renovated facades refer to what was created by architects and engineers from 1950s. Cost of the renovation of tenement houses is nearly 39 million PLN.
