As previously announced, Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw, is rising pay for trainee and contract teachers. This year, higher salaries can be expected by the school staff in 11 districts.

Today, the Mayor of Warsaw signed the proposed amendment to the rules and regulations concerning salaries for trainee and contract teachers, and submitted it to the educational trade unions for assessment. Pay increases are to be awarded to over 9,600 teachers.

“As I promised, starting with January, we’re increasing the pay for the most junior teachers, so that, on the one hand, we can encourage university graduates to come to work and, on the other hand, retain those teachers who are already working. This is the first stage of the pay rise for teachers. We have already earmarked PLN 39 million for this purpose,” said Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw. “And this year, the December wages will already be higher for more than 7 thousand school and pre-school staff members. Today, I have also sent letters about this to schools and District Heads.”

Let us note that, according to the Teacher’s Charter, it is the Government that is primarily responsible for teachers’ pay. However, given the more-apparent-than-real pay increase from the Ministry of National Education (MEN), and insufficient subsidies, teachers’ remuneration has actually become the responsibility of local governments. No stable teaching staff (‘travelling’ teachers) and vacancies in schools are some of the consequences of the recent educational system ‘deform’ in Poland. For the first time in history, Capital City’s schools were as many as 1,600 teachers short. Some professionals have transferred to non-public schools, and some have quit the job entirely. We have real reasons to be afraid, as the next year might bring another huge number of teachers resigning, while double the normal amount of students are expected to go to secondary schools. All this educational scheme-related chaos, coupled with considerable workload, can make university graduates change their mind and choose a different profession. In fact, Warsaw is a large and absorptive job market, and teachers can choose from a wide range of jobs other than schools.

Rising pay for trainee and contract teachers
Warsaw’s schools and other educational institutions employ 8,000 contract teachers and 1,500 trainee teachers. In total, there are over 9,600 professionals, which corresponds to 30% of all teachers in Warsaw. Starting with January 2019, 7,200 contract teachers with the degree of magister (MA/MSc) and teaching qualifications will be awarded PLN 270 as a rise in addition to their base salaries, and more than a thousand trainee teachers with equal qualifications will each receive a PLN 250 rise.
